Medieval Art Appreciation guides students into the rich visual world of the medieval period through the study, imitation, and analysis of masterworks from diverse cultures and traditions
The Unit Study includes the study of the Medieval Bestiary, illuminated manuscripts, the Aztec Codex Borgia, Japanese Samurai art, Mozarabic art and architecture, and Renaissance art and linear perspective, centered on Christ Handing the Keys of the Kingdom to St. Peter by Pietro Perugino. These works represent artistic traditions from Europe, Mexico, Japan, and Iraq, offering students a meaningful encounter with the visual arts of the medieval world.
Students observe significant works of art, learn foundational principles of art theory and composition, and engage in thoughtful artistic practice that strengthens creativity, confidence, focus, perseverance, problem-solving, and nonverbal communication.
